Helpful Savusavu Travel Tips
Important info for the flight over –
We have found that taking the time and hassle to pick up your checked bags when you arrive in LAX and rechecking them in for the Fiji trip will alleviate having lost/left bags when you arrive in Fiji. Better yet, pack a change of clothing in your carry on just in case your bags do get delayed. Also, we’ve found that earplugs and Tylenol PM or Benedryl will help you sleep on the flight over.
Duty free shopping in Fiji–
Liquors & spirits are quite expensive in Fiji. If you like having Kahlua or Bailey’s in your morning coffee, you should plan to pick up a bottle on your way into Fiji. Each person is allowed 2 liters of alcohol per person and you can purchase it after getting your boarding pass at the Duty Free concession at your int’l airport on the way out of your country. Fiji does have it’s own beer, Fiji Bitter, which is quite good as well as producing Bounty Rum. They also import many delicious wines from New Zealand & Australia that are reasonably priced and available at our local wine shop.
What to bring & wear on your Fiji vacation–
Savusavu is a very casual place. You will only need shorts, shirts and sandals. A nice sundress for going out in the evening will suffice if you want to “dress up.” Be sure to bring your swimsuit, sunglasses, hat & sunscreen. If you plan to visit a village, you will need to dress more modestly by covering your shoulders. Sunglasses, hats & short shorts are not acceptable in the village. It rarely ever gets cool enough in the winter to even wear a light sweater.
Luggage allowances –
Most overseas flights allow each person 1 checked bags at a maximum weight of 50 lbs. (22 kg) per bag. Depending on the carrier & point of departure, it is always wise to check ahead of time on weight allowances. As the inter-island carriers use smaller planes, their maximum weight allowance is 33 lbs. (15 kg) per person and they will almost always charge you for the extra weight. If you are planning to dive or snorkel, you can leave your weights & snorkel masks at home as we have plenty of both which will free up your luggage for more handicrafts to take home.
Packing tips –
If you have any special dietary or medical needs, you better bring along anything you might need as you may not be able to find it here. You won’t be able to find “exotic” foods in the local grocery and it’s a good idea to ask before bringing over any special foods so you don’t end up having to leave them at the Agricultural Inspection on your way thru Customs.
Banking info –
There is a bank located in the baggage claim area of Nadi airport when you first arrive and we hear the rates are quite good. Savusavu has 3 banks, ANZ, BSP (Bank of South Pacific) & Westpac for all your banking needs and each of these banks has a 24-hour ATM out front. Fiji cash is “king” and the main way to purchase most items. Credit cards can only be used in a few tourist type stores as well as the large grocery store in Savusavu.
